Moving Tips for Your Next Adventure

A little preparation can make moving day safer, smoother, and a whole lot less stressful.

  1. Make Sure Your Moving Company Is Insured
Before hiring anyone, ask about insurance coverage and what protection applies to your move. A professional moving company should be willing to explain its coverage and answer your questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for proof of insurance.
  2. Know Exactly What You’re Hiring
Ask what is included in your quote. Are you paying by the hour or a flat rate? Are there additional charges for stairs, heavy items, travel time, packing materials, or other services? Knowing beforehand helps prevent surprises.
  3. Be Honest About Heavy or Specialty Items
Tell your movers ahead of time about gun safes, pianos, oversized furniture, exercise equipment, appliances, or anything unusually heavy. These items may require additional movers, equipment, or preparation.
  4. Reserve Your Rental Truck Early
If you’re using a labor-only moving company like Uncharted Moving, reserve your rental truck or trailer well in advance—especially during weekends, summer months, and the end or beginning of the month.
  5. Choose the Right Size Moving Truck
Going too small can mean making extra trips or discovering halfway through loading that everything won’t fit. When in doubt, discuss the size of your home and amount of belongings with the rental company or your movers.
  6. Start Packing Earlier Than You Think You Need To
Packing almost always takes longer than expected. Start with things you rarely use and work toward everyday essentials as moving day approaches.
  7. Label Every Box
Label boxes with both the room and general contents. Instead of just writing “Kitchen,” try “Kitchen — Pots & Pans.” Clearly mark fragile boxes as well.
  8. Don’t Overload Your Boxes
Just because something fits doesn’t mean the box should weigh 80 pounds. Use smaller boxes for books and other heavy items and larger boxes for lightweight belongings like linens and pillows.
  9. Use Quality Boxes and Packing Materials
Weak, damaged, or overused boxes are more likely to collapse when stacked. Sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and quality tape can make a big difference.
  10. Pack an Essentials Box
Keep medications, toiletries, chargers, important paperwork, a change of clothes, basic tools, toilet paper, and other necessities somewhere easily accessible. You’ll thank yourself when you aren’t digging through 40 boxes that night.
  11. Keep Valuables and Important Documents With You
Personally transport cash, jewelry, identification, passports, financial documents, medications, sentimental items, and other irreplaceable belongings whenever possible.
  12. Take Photos Before Disconnecting Electronics
Take a quick picture of the back of your TV, computer, gaming system, or entertainment center before unplugging everything. It’ll make reconnecting everything much easier.
  13. Empty and Prepare Appliances Ahead of Time
Refrigerators and freezers should be emptied and prepared before moving. Washing machines, dryers, and other appliances may also need to be disconnected in advance.
  14. Measure Before Moving Day
Measure large furniture, doorways, stairways, hallways, and elevators. Finding out your sectional won’t fit through the new front door is much easier to deal with before moving day.
  15. Clear the Path for Your Movers
Remove clutter from hallways, stairs, entryways, and walkways. A clear path makes the move faster and helps reduce the risk of trips, falls, and damage.
  16. Make Arrangements for Children and Pets
Open doors, heavy furniture, equipment, and constant foot traffic can make moving day hectic. If possible, arrange a safe place for young children and pets while loading and unloading takes place.
  17. Check Parking Before Moving Day
Make sure your rental truck or trailer has somewhere safe and legal to park as close to the home as possible. If you’re moving into an apartment, check with management about parking, elevators, and move-in requirements.
  18. Don’t Forget About Wyoming Weather
Wyoming weather doesn’t always cooperate. Have a plan for snow, ice, rain, wind, or extreme temperatures. Keep walkways clear and let your movers know about potentially hazardous conditions.
  19. Do a Final Walk-Through
Before leaving, check closets, cabinets, drawers, garages, sheds, basements, attics, and outdoor areas. These are some of the easiest places to leave something behind.
  20. Don’t Choose a Moving Company Based on Price Alone
Price matters, but so do experience, professionalism, insurance, communication, and how your belongings are treated. Ask questions and choose movers you feel comfortable trusting inside your home and around your possessions.
